چکیده

Beginning with Fitch and Hauser (2004), a number of studies have used the Artificial Grammar Learning task to investigate learning rules generating hierarchical structural relations among sequences of elements that are characteristic of the grammar of human languages. Studies that have examined the learning of a center-embedding rule (AB rule) exemplified by the sentence, The dogs the girl the boys like feeds bark incessantly have provided mixed results. We present the results of three experiments that demonstrate learning when training occurs incrementally (e.g., Lai & Poletiek, 2011) and requires feedback when testing with a grammaticality judgment task. We also use a novel completion task, which demonstrated learning both with and without feedback. In all cases, not all participants learned the rule.

A Novel Approach to Conditional Random Field-based Named Entity Recognition using Persian Specific Features

Named Entity Recognition is an information extraction technique that identifies name entities in a text. Three popular methods have been conventionally used namely: rule-based, machine-learning-based and hybrid of them to extract named entities from a text. Machine-learning-based methods have good performance in the Persian language if they are trained with good features. To get good performanc...

The Comparative Effect of Task Type and Learning Conditions on the Achievement of Specific Target Forms

The completion mode (individual, collaborative) of the tasks and the conditions under which these modes are performed have been reported to play an important role in language learning. The present study aimed to investigate the effects of employing text editing tasks performed both individually and collaboratively, on the achievement of English grammar under explicit and implicit learning condi...

The Impact of Structured Input-based Tasks on L2 Learners’ Grammar Learning

Abstract Task-based language teaching has received increased attention in second language research. However, the combination of structured input-based approach and task-based language teaching has not been examined in relation to L2 grammar learning. To address this gap, the present study investigated how the structured input-based tasks with and without explicit information impacted learners’ ...

Dissociating Sources of Knowledge in Artificial Grammar Learning

Previous studies have suggested that individuals use both implicit and explicit, as well as rule and exemplar-based knowledge, to make grammaticality judgments in artificial grammar learning (AGL) tasks. Experiment 1 explored the importance of explicit mechanisms in the learning of exemplar and rule-based information by using a dual-task during AGL training. We utilized a balanced chunk strengt...
